Class Descriptions
Yoga Foundations - Build your practice from a strong foundation or reinforce your established one. During this class, the focus is on breathing techniques and alignment. We will move slowly and consciously through our transitions and discover a deeper level to poses as we linger longer to allow tension and stress to release fully from our bodies and minds and in its place allow prana to flow freely and effortlessly.
Vinyasa Yoga - A blend of styles, Vinyasa has emerged from its roots in Ashtanga and Power Yoga to become one of the most popular forms of yoga practiced in the US today. The class flows from pose to pose integrating breath with movement leading students deeper into their moving meditation practice. Most classes begin with centering and breathwork, then we build heat with various Sun Salutations, continue with a Standing Flow Sequence, and then return close to the floor for a combination of seated forward bends, backbends, arm balances, inversions, twists and final relaxation. Different options are offered to accommodate varied levels of students' abilities. This is a physically challenging class best for those with some prior yoga experience.
Gentle Yoga - A soothing sequence of postures to prepare the body for rest at the end of the day. This class begins with a variety of pranayama (breathing techniques) to quiet the mind and instill a sense of stillness and peace. We then move through a gentle warm up sequence close to the floor to loosen stiff joints and to prepare the body for standing poses. This is followed by basic standing poses that encourage improvements in balance, endurance, and flexibility. We then return to the floor for leg stretches, gentle backbends, hip openers, and twists. We end in final relaxation or Savasana. Appropriate for all students. Great class to begin your yoga practice.
Hatha Yoga - A classical sequencing of breathing techniques and poses based in the Sivananda style of yoga. Class begins in relaxation pose and explores breathing techniques to cleanse and balance energy. We then move into hip openers and sun salutations, leg stretches and abdominal strengtheners, inversions, backbends, standing poses to improve balance and flexibility, and then final relaxation. Appropriate for all levels. Please alert instructor of any physical limitations prior to beginning of class.
Yoga with Michael Marchese - This classes offers a blend of Michael's twenty years of experience teaching many styles of yoga including Iyengar and Kripalu and is geared toward the unique needs and abilities of students present.
Beginner Pilates Mat - We begin to find our center and connect to our core as we explore the foundation exercises of the Pilates Matwork. Class begins with core fundamentals which train the arms and legs to move freely while the torso remains stable thereby strengthening the abdominals and back and releasing tension in shoulders and hips. We then move through Joe's basic core exercises designed to lengthen the body as it's strengthened leaving students with long, strong muscles and relief from back and joints pain.
Intermediate Pilates Mat - Building from the strong foundation built from the Beginner Matwork we add more challenging exercises into the mix. Students should be able to complete 'Roll Up' and 'Teaser' and be free of any neck or back injuries before taking this class.
Pilates Chair - The latest in Pilates Equipment, the MVe Chair, offers a challenging workout for students. This class takes matwork to the next level integrating a special "chair" we sit on, stand on, lay over, and sometimes under to press against its springs and add an extra challenge to our core work. ***Prior experience in Pilates is necessary to take this class.***
Pilatesstick - Experience Pilates "without limits" with the Pilatesstick, a completely portable (and very affordable) version of the traditional Tower. During our classes Matwork is infused with challenging spring resistance. We will explore prone, seated, kneeling and standing exercises to develop strong arms and abs and long lean legs. (Pilatessticks are available for purchase at Balance for only $150.) Prior experience in Pilates is necessary to take this class.
